PETE'S FAMILY HISTORY
Here we are with the history of The Perrys (Pete's dad's family) and The Cards (Pete's mum's family)....
LATEST!
I have just discovered that I have a long- lost distant cousin in Michael Crinley!
He recently contacted us, informing me that his Great Aunt was a sister to my paternal Grandmother, Sarah Caroline Dukes, who married James Perry at St Botolph with Bishopsgate, London on 5th April 1891.
At the age of only 12, Sarah's Father, Robert Dukes, (1825-1884) died, and a year later, at the age of 13, her mother, Eliza Susanna Johnson (1829-1885) also died leaving her sister-in-law to bring her up.
THE PERRY FAMILY
The Perry Coat of Arms
The furthest we can go back with the Perry line is to Pete's paternal grandfather, James Perry, (above) born in Chelmsford in 1863, to James Perry, a Lodger horsekeeper, born in Chelmsford in 1843, and Martha Perry, nee Rogers, born in Bishopsgate in 1845.
THE DUKES FAMILY

James married Pete's paternal grandmother, Sarah Caroline Dukes, (pictured above with her eldest son) was born in Bishopsgate on 7th April 1872, to Robert and Eliza Susanna (nee Johnson) Dukes at St Botolph, Middlesex, in 1891.
Her brothers and sisters (so far found) were: Emma Elizabeth (1853-1901) Anna Eliza (1864-1920) and Robert John (1867-1922)
They had ten children: Mabel Caroline (1893-1909), James Stanley Victor, (1896-1942), Alfred Charles (1897-1917), Harold Robert (1900-1901), Minnie Rosina Maud (1901-1985), Wilfred Charles Alexander (1903-1964), Ethel Sarah (1905-1990), Frank Henry, my dad, (1907-1964), Florence Ivy (1909-1999) and Elise Mary (1910-1997).
The eldest son, James (Big Jim), who was a Royal Naval Captain, RM48 Commando. Jim died in June 1942 during the Normandy Invasion, Operation Overlord.
BELOW: James when he was Cheif Petty Officer.
Other children included ALFRED HENRY PERRY who died on September 20, 1943 in Military Service, Harold who died as a child, William Perry, a bus driver who died at the wheel, Frank Henry Perry (Pete's father) born in Walthamstow, London on 15th March 1906, Mabel ( who died at the age of 16) Minnie, Ethel, Florence and Elise, dates of birth not known.
It seems that James Snr was a Horsekeeper, and his son James was a stable boy.
Sarah Dukes was the daughter of client Robert Dukes, and James and Sarah met and fell in love via this connection.
Robert and Sarah Dukes lived at 53 Leadenhall Street London. Their children were: Mabel, born in Finsbury, 1894, Alfred, born in Chelmsford in 1897, Harold, born in Belvedere 1900,
Mable Caroline, the eldest (seated, above) was born on 16th April 1893, and died at the age of 16 in 1909. Alfred is on her knee, Minnie is seated beside Mabel, and James is standing behind.
Pete's dad Frank (above) ran away from home at 17, lied about his age and joined the Seaforth Highlanders, where he became Batman to The Colonel at Fort George in Scotland. He was an excellent cook, who could rustle up Cordon Bleu meals.
Pete's cousin June (above) died of meningitis shortly after this photo was taken, in 1939, when Pete was only 2 years old.
The daughter of Pete's aunt Florence (pictured above), She was a child progidy in playing the piano.
After June's death, her father, Alfred Ind, was called up to fight for his country in the army, and so Florence joined the WAAF to serve her country in WWII, so they never had the time to grieve properly.
Pete followed in Florence's footsteps by joining the RAF in 1955, and running the radio show 'After The Bull' at RAF Ruislip

THE MEE FAMILY
The Mee Coat of Arms
* * * * * * *
Pete's maternal Grandmother, Mary Anne Caroline Card (nee Mee) was born on 14th March 1871 at 16 Addey Street, Deptford, to Mary Anne Mee (formerly Cramp, nee Daniel) and Joseph Mee, a shoemaker (Journeyman).
Joseph Mee was born 24/01/1829 of parents Jacob and Susanna Mee.
Joseph was married to Mary Ann Cramp (maiden name Daniel) in June 1859.
Mary had been previously married to Zebulon Cramp 1833-1857. We can assume from the marraige certificate that Zebulon died, making Mary a widow...

We have found JACOB MEE married to SUSANNA with a JOSEPH, a son born 1829 .
(IGI record)
Further enquiries seem to put them in St. Marylebone Poor House and JOSEPH may have married SUSANNA ATKINS in 1828, (pagets) - all happening in the poor house!

THE CARD FAMILY
The Card Coat of Arms
ABOVE: William John Card (a basket Fitter with The Royal Mail, Mount Pleasant) and Mary Mee married in June 1893 in Poplar. The story goes that Wiliam, a known wit and romantic, proposed with 'Will you marry me Mary Mee?'
The furthest we can go back with the Card family is with the birth Pete's maternal grandfather, William John Card, (pictured above) born 14th September 1867 at 15 Coupland Terrace, Plumstead, Kent.
He appears in 1851 census, living at 8 Burrage Place, Lewisham, Plumstead, Eltham, Kent, with his father William John Card, a labourer with The Royal Arsenal, who was born in 1849 in Woolwich, his mother, Mary Anne Card (nee Saunders) a former laundry maid, and his brothers and sisters, Sarah, Henry (a guard boy), Charlotte (a scholar) and Samuel (also a scholar).
According to the 1901 census, they lived at 8 Chatham avenue, Deptford, Kent.
William was also a keen gardener, specialising in lilies, and also a very good artist. These traits have been passed down the generations to Pete, via his uncles Herbert, Harold and Alfred, and shared with his cousins, Bert, Sylvia, Kenneth, Betty and Beryl.
The above photograph has recently emerged, showing William (Far left) with colleagues, wearing arm bands. We believe these arm bands denoted that William was a 'Specail Constable' at the turn of the 20th Century.
Children living with them there were: William J Card, Herbert E Card, Arthur P Card, and Alfred C Card.
William J Card born in 1895 and died in 1922 (aged 28) He married a "Nellie Quick" and served in the army in the first world war.
Later, they had Doris Ivy (Pete's mother), below, (born 25th December 1902 in Hoxley New Town, Shoreditch), Harold, Hilda and Irene.
Doris Ivy Card, Pete's mum, who married...
Frank Henry Perry in 14th September 1929, and they had three children...
Patricia (Born 28th August 1931), Peter (born 30th June 1937) and Eileen (Born 1st September 1934).
Doris was a meek and mild little lady and an adoring mother to her children. As she was born on Christmas Day, her husband Frank cooked all the meals on that Festive occasion every year.
